Build a Business... Not Another Job

Build a Business... Not Another Job
Written by Kimberly Fowler

Many people dream of working for themselves—being their own boss and having the freedom to take on only the clients and projects they love.

However, there’s a big difference between building a business and being self-employed. Let me break it down for you:

  • Business owners scale their income.

  • Self-employed people trade dollars for hours.

  • Business owners leverage the skills and talents of others.

  • Self-employed people rely solely on their own skills.

Feeling discouraged? Don’t be! Every successful business owner started out self-employed. The key is to make sure you don’t stay stuck there. These tips will help you shift from simply running a job to building a scalable, sustainable business.

1. Don’t Try to Do It All Yourself

Building a successful, sustainable business means you need to leverage others’ talents. At first, it may seem like the most cost-effective option to do everything yourself, especially when you have more time than money. But believe me, trying to do it all will only lead to burnout and stress.

Instead, divide your tasks into two categories:

  • Tasks you love and are great at (like marketing)

  • Tasks you dislike or aren't skilled at

Then, make a plan to delegate those tasks you’re not good at. If you’re not ready to outsource everything, start small—delegate the tasks you procrastinate on the most, even if it’s just a few hours each month.

2. Don’t Allow Yourself to Work All the Time

The beauty of working from home is also its biggest challenge: there’s no clear separation between work and home life. Without boundaries, it’s all too easy to find yourself working nonstop, often at the expense of your relationships and personal well-being.

Here’s how you can set boundaries:

  • Set specific work hours and stick to them.

  • Create an office space with a door you can close when you’re done for the day.

  • Schedule personal time for family, hobbies, and self-care.

  • Take regular breaks to recharge your energy.

These boundaries will help you maintain a healthy work-life balance and avoid burnout.

3. Vacations and Downtime Are Essential

You didn’t start a business to be chained to your desk. While there may be times when you need to be available more, you should always have a plan to take time off. Here’s how to build a business that gives you more freedom:

  • Have a team or contractors you can trust to handle things when you’re unavailable.

  • Use automation tools like autoresponders and webinars to keep things running smoothly.

  • Create repeatable systems for common tasks so you’re not reinventing the wheel every time.

While you may not be able to disconnect entirely for weeks at a time, you should at least be able to check in briefly each day while enjoying some well-deserved downtime. It’s possible! With the right planning and systems in place, you can reduce your workload and reclaim your time.
