Since the young age of eight, I was in love with tax prep and accounting. Although I had no idea of what this career entailed at that age, I had a family member that we would visit from time to time. He had a really nice suburban lifestyle. A beautiful house, a pool, nice cars, and overall, a happy and comfortable life. I didn’t exactly have that growing up, and as a young girl, I was always curious about how he made all that money. One day I built up the nerve to ask, and the answer I got was an accounting and tax professional. I was sold! Ever since then, it was etched in my brain that I would become a tax expert, but I didn’t necessarily know that entrepreneurship existed.

So, very early in my career I took the necessary courses and became a tax professional. I worked for Jackson Hewitt for a little over six years, and then took a step up and accepted a position with a CPA firm. I liked my job and had a pretty comfortable salary, but it’s not like I was balling. Then one day, I had a breakthrough. I tell you it was nothing but God. By chance I saw the profit and loss statement for the company, and then I looked at my bonus for the year. I said to myself, “Hold up! Pump the brakes!” Something did not add up. I will not tell you how much the company was making, but let’s just say it was a lot and my bonus was a little bit in comparison.  In other words, I knew the value I was bringing to that firm and my paycheck did not reflect it.

So, in 2014 I took the leap of faith and started TaxPro Financial Service. I wish that I could tell you that I blew up overnight, but it didn’t happen that way. Baby, the struggle was real! I quickly realized that owning a tax prep business was much different than simply working for one. What software should I use? Should I open an office or work from home? What should I name it? How will I attract clients? How do you recruit employees? Where will I get the money for all of this? Phone system. Computers. Systems. Processes. I was overwhelmed!

Nevertheless, I was able to launch my tax business, get some referrals, and generate income from a computer in my kitchen. Even met people in the parking lots at McDonalds... LOL! I read everything that I could get my hands on about taxes, business, working at home, etc. I also made every mistake I could possibly make, and honestly, some of them I repeated two or three times. I searched for solutions through webinars, coaching, and training. Nothing seemed to provide everything I needed in once place. I promised myself that if I ever figured it out that I would share the blueprint with other start-up or early stage TaxPreneurs like you. Well, I can now say with confidence that I made it. This doesn’t mean that I don’t still deal with challenges, but I jumped those hurdles that cause most small businesses to fail before they hit the five-year mark.

After overcoming these hurdles, I have been able to bring other tax pros along with me on the journey!
